FAQ

7 min read

I am posting an FAQ to help people find out more information about my interest in photography and a bit about myself.

What's your full name?
Marie-Louise Monica Collins.

When were you born?
28/08/1991

Where are you from?
I was born in Montreal, Quebec. I moved to Kamloops, BC when I was 10 months old but can speak fluent French : )

What do you specialize in?
I specialize in fashion, beauty and portrait photography work.

Did you study photography?
I am mostly self taught in photography and photoshop but have taken two photography classes, Film Photography and Digital Photography that have given me the basics.

At what age did you start?
I've been taking photos with film cameras since I was very young. As far as seriously and for artistic value, I started at the age of 16 with self portraits. I took the Film Photography class at the age of 17 and worked with friend to create images with concepts and themes. I started to take it seriously at the age of 18, setting up shoots with agency models, and have took on several couples shoots as well as a wedding.

What was your first camera?
My first camera ever was an automatic film camera that my mother would let me borrow. The first camera that I purchased for myself was a 3mega pixel Kodak camera that I used for travel photos.

Where do you get your models from?
When I first started my friends were very helpful in putting up with me experiment with them. I remember asking my friend Chelsie to dress up in my vintage dress and wear a mini top hat for my Film photography class. It's great to be able to work with friends, especially when you are just starting out because they are understanding and are happy to get some nice photos in the end. Since then, I used a website called Model Mayhem to make contact with models in the area before I started to call agencies.

Do you use Adobe Photoshop? How did you learn?
I do, it is incredibly versatile and very easy to use. I mostly taught myself but have looked up videos on Youtube if I want to learn a bit more about a particular tool or how to get a certain look.

You seem to prefer shooting on location to studio - why is this?
There is so much character in on location shoots. I feel that it gives the story a more realistic feel. It dramatically changes the style of the shoot if you put a model in studio opposed to on location. If I put a model in a dress in a studio, it would look very commercial or catalouge, where as on location can give you both a commercial look or editorial if you so choose.
What websites do you use to showcase your work?
A photographer's most important online portfolio should be their personal website. My website (www.marie-louise.ca) is very important to show to clients and agencies.
I also use DeviantART, Flickr, Modelmayhem, Facebook & Twitter.

Have you ever assisted a photographer?
Not yet, but I would love the opportunity!

Do you use natural light or artifical lighting?
I prefer natural lighting, it is the most beautiful; soft and magical.
Studio lighting is used when I work indoors or if the job requires it - I love creative lighting or trying to recreate natural indoors.

Have you got any favourite photographers or influences?
Tim Walker, Paolo Roversi, Annie Leibovitz, Lara Jade, Melissa Rodwell... the list can go on but these are my top : )

What equipment do you use at the moment?
I have an Olympus E-33o but I am primarily using my Canon Mk II. For studio lighting I use some lighting equipment I got off ebay for quite a good price, two soft-boxes for $100. I also have 2 reflectors.

What are you inspired by?
I am inspired by many things, top things are music, dreams, personal experiences, magazines, and fashion.
I believe I get my drive from the wanting to transition the image I have in my mind into something tangible that the world can see.

Have you had any exhibitions?
I have had my work exhibited at my University but I am currently signed up for an exhibition at the Wilson House Gallery in September 2011 in Kamloops!

Is it important to have a style?
As well as important contacts, another important factor in being a successful photographer is style. There's so much competition in the photography industry that you need to be original to stand out. You will only achieve a unique style by constantly pushing yourself.

What equipment would you recommend for a starting photographer?
Many beautiful images have been taken with compact cameras. You do not have to go out and buy a very expensive camera to get quality photos. I would recommend Canon personally and a camera that has manual settings. This way you can have control over how the image will turn out and begin to understand aperture and shutter speed settings.

Hope this helps some of you out there! Please do not hesitate to send me a question, I would be happy to help out : )

Take care and thanks for reading!

This is quite a bit late to mention but during the summer, on a day where I was stressed out with work (working 2 jobs at the time) and trying to arrange photo shoots. I had not been on Deviantart in a while and popped it open to post some new work. I found myself with several new messages and over a thousand favourites.

How this had happened, I had no idea until I check my messages to see that I had received a DD! My first ever DD on a my "Achluophobia II" piece.

Achluophobia II by MarieLouisePhoto

This feature has meant a lot to me and I am so happy to see that my work managed to be view by over 9000 people. Even a glimpse at my work it something every artist strives for, and for people to interpret it and understand the concept, or create their own, is incredibly rewarding.

So thank you everyone for Favouriting and watching me! :D:heart:

Hi everyone,

I am sorry for not being on here very much. My computer needs repair. I know, I shouldn't make excuses. Just giving you a small little update on whats being going on.

I have recently purchased a mark II with my savings and can't be happier with the change of equipment. I hope to buy a 50mm and 85mm lens to increase the quality and style of my photos.

I have recently shot a wedding shoot so I can create a wedding package for clients. My website is still under construction. I'm not completely happy with the design. I want something simple but unique. I am also working on updating and making a blog.

I have lost a lot of watchers from my old account, to be expected. I am having troubles getting my images moved over because my computer is being repaired. But I will move them over and continue updating my deviantart account and flickr.

Hope every one is doing well! Summer is on its way and it looks great here in BC Canada.

Take care everyone, thanks again for the support :)

Hi guys, so my previous account was Nightmare-Lenne and I created that account about 5-6 years ago and I dont think the name suits me anymore. People wont know who I am or that my real name is Marie-Louise and has nothing to do with Lenne (I really liked FFX-2 at the time :P).

So please, if you watched me on my old account, please watch me here as I will be transfereing my things over the period of 2 months because that is how long my subscription lasts on that account.

Thanks for your support!
